Can You Install a TV Above a Fireplace?

One of the most common design questions we’re asked is whether it’s possible to install a TV above a fireplace. The good news is yes — it’s absolutely doable. However, doing it correctly requires careful thought, planning, and the right technical setup to ensure a long-lasting and safe installation.

It Depends on the Type of Fireplace

Not all fireplaces produce the same level of heat, and this is the key factor in determining whether — and how — a TV can be positioned above one.

  • Open Fronted Gas Fires
These fires are largely decorative and have a lower heat output, making them more forgiving when integrating a TV above. With the correct wall construction and spacing, it’s generally straightforward to combine the two.
  • Glass Fronted Gas Fires
These models are high-efficiency heating appliances that produce significantly higher heat levels. Installing a TV above a glass-fronted gas fire requires precise planning to prevent heat from affecting the screen and its components.
  • Bioethanol Fires
While bioethanol fires are clean-burning and flueless, they still emit substantial radiant heat. It’s crucial to use heat-resistant materials and maintain sufficient clearance between the fire and TV.
  • Wood Burning Fires
A wood fire generates intense, sustained heat, so additional precautions must be taken. A substantial void or separation zone, proper insulation, and ventilation are essential.

Key Considerations for a Safe and Lasting Installation

  1. Plan the Wall Construction Carefully
The materials used to build the chimney breast or enclosure will dictate how well heat is managed. Using specialist heat-resistant insulation boards (such as calcium silicate or vermiculite-based boards) helps reduce heat transfer from the fireplace to the wall and, ultimately, to the TV.
  2. Maintain Adequate Distance
Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for minimum clearances between the top of the fireplace and the bottom of the TV. The goal is to keep the TV out of the main heat plume that rises from the fire.
  3. Recessing the TVsee example
Where possible, recessing the TV into the wall offers two benefits:
    • It helps protect the screen from rising heat.
    • It creates a cleaner, more integrated design aesthetic.
  4. Ensure Proper Ventilation
Good airflow behind and above the TV cavity helps dissipate residual heat. Adding discreet ventilation slots or grilles within the chimney breast can make a significant difference to the longevity of the TV and any built-in electronics.
  5. Use Quality Materials
From heat-resistant plasterboard to thermal insulation layers, using the right construction materials ensures the installation performs well and looks pristine for years to come.

The Bottom Line

Installing a TV above a fireplace is entirely achievable and can look stunning when executed properly. However, the success of the setup depends on the type of fireplace, the wall construction, and the level of thermal protection built into the design.
